Depois de semanas de especulação, o Imperador Akihito do Japão dirigiu uma mensagem ao povo Japonês e ao Mundo através de um video divulgado hoje.
After weeks of speculation, Japan's Emperor Akihito sent a message to the Japanese people and the world through a video released today.
Se pensam encontrar nesta mensagem, que pode ser lida integralmente aqui, a palavra "abdicação" nua e crua, pensem de novo! Dado que não existe uma Lei na Constituição do Japão que prevê este caso, o Imperador nunca poderia usar este termo (ainda) anti-constitucional.
If you think you'll find on this message that can be read in full here, the word "abdication", think again! Since the Japanese constitution doesn't have a section related to it, and so the Emperor could never use this term, because it (still) is anti-constitutional.
Ainda assim, o Imperador faz algumas afirmações onde sabiamente deixa a porta aberta para a mudança. Akihito refere que foi fundamentalmente a sua saúde que o tem feito pensar muito no futuro da Casa Imperial do Japão:

"Quando ultrapasso a casa dos 80 anos de idade, houve alturas em que senti algumas limitações, nomeadamente na minha resistência física, que me levaram a começar a reflectir nos meus anos como Imperador e a contemplar o meu papel e os meus deveres de Imperador nos anos que estão para vir."
"As I am now more than 80 years old and there are times when I feel various constraints such as in my physical fitness, in the last few years I have started to reflect on my years as the Emperor, and contemplate on my role and my duties as the Emperor in the days to come."
No seu discurso Akihito referiu ainda como viu, ao longo dos seus 28 anos de reinado, o seu papel e o da Família Imperial para com o povo do Japão e de que forma ele olha para uma monarquia cada vez mais próxima e activa na sociedade, apesar das suas tradições milenares.

"Desde a minha ascensão ao trono, que levei a cabo vários actos como Imperador em questões de Estado, e ao mesmo tempo devotei muito tempo à procura e a tentar compreender o que é expectável no papel de Imperador, que é o símbolo do Estado pela Constituição do Japão. Como alguém que herdou uma longa tradição, sempre senti um profundo sentido de responsabilidade em proteger essa tradição (...) Continuo a pensar, ainda hoje, em como a Família Imperial Japonesa pode colocar as suas tradições em uso nos dias de hoje ao mesmo tempo que toma uma parte activa e inerente na sociedade, respondendo assim àquelas que são as expectativas do povo".
"Ever since my accession to the throne, I have carried out the acts of the Emperor in matters of state, and at the same time I have spent my days searching for and contemplating on what is the desirable role of the Emperor, who is designated to be the symbol of the State by the Constitution of Japan. Entrando na parte mais delicada do seu discurso, o Imperador, com uma escolha muito sábia de palavras, refere:

"Para ultrapassar o envelhecimento do Imperador, penso que não é possível continuar a reduzir indeterminadamente, os actos dos Imperador em matéria de Estado e como símbolo de Estado. Uma Regência pode ser estabelecida para actuar no lugar do Imperador, quando ele não consegue realizar os seus deveres por ser muito novo ou por estar demasiado doente. Mesmo nestes casos, isso não muda o facto do Imperador continuar a ser Imperador, até ao fim da sua vida, mesmo que ele esteja impedido de realizar os seus deveres como Imperador".
"In coping with the aging of the Emperor, I think it is not possible to continue reducing perpetually the Emperor’s acts in matters of state and his duties as the symbol of the State. A Regency may be established to act in the place of the Emperor when the Emperor cannot fulfill his duties for reasons such as he is not yet of age or he is seriously ill. Even in such cases, however, it does not change the fact that the Emperor continues to be the Emperor till the end of his life, even though he is unable to fully carry out his duties as the Emperor."

"É tradição na Família Imperial que perante a morte de um Imperador, seja estabelecido um período de luto rigoroso com vários eventos durante 2 meses, seguido por um funeral cujas cerimónias continuam por mais um ano. Estes eventos variados ocorrem simultaneamente com outros eventos relacionados com uma nova Era, colocando um peso muito pesado em todos os envolvidos nestes eventos, em particular, a família. Por vezes ocorre-me que será possível evitar tal situação."
