Rainha Sonja celebra 80 anos (outra vez!) / Queen Sonja celebrates 80th birthday (again!)

There are birthdays. There are royal birthdays. And then there are those birthdays that by the importance of the date deserve to be celebrated more than once. This is what happened with Queen Sonja of Norway. The friendly consort of King Harald V turned 80 yesterday, and after the official celebrations in May (see here and here), it was time for a more intimate and cultural celebration. No tiaras envolved, but still very close to the people and quite special.

The birthday girl accompanied by her husband, her two children, Crown Prince Haakon, Princess Martha-Louise, her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, her five grandchildren, and Princess Astrid attended the inauguration of a new statue at the Palace Park. The bronze piece, created by Kirsten Kokkin, was a gift from the Norwegian Tourism Association, of which the Queen is patron.

The statue represents Sonja's love for outdoor walks, discovery of new trails and the spirit of adventure and contact with nature. It is said that the Queen has hike almost all mountains of Norway, due her love for outdoor sports and hiking. In the sculpture we can see a relaxed Sonja in casual clothes, with a backpack next to her, and she seems to be resting and contemplating a wonderful view... Or at least that is my interpretation of art.

Prince Haakon's speech at the unveiling of the statue also seems to confirm my theory:

"This statue will inspire everyone to get up and go out there, whether it's just for a walk through Songnsvann or an afternoon spent here in the park. Research has shown that anyone who is physically active lives with more joy and enthusiasm. If you want to be happy, you have to go out there and take a walk, and when you are walking, pause and reflect a little. That's also very important."

Subsequently Queen Sonja inaugurated, as announced in the May celebrations, the "Dronning Sonja KunstStallen" (Stable of Art Queen Sonja). The facilities were a birthday gift from her husband, which Sonja decided to transform into a place dedicated to the arts. At the inauguration were exhibited various graphic works of Norwegian artists.

Another of the great surprises of the inaugural exhibition was a tribute to Queen Maud, a great lover of horses and photography. The Norwegian government assembled a set of photographs of Queen Maud's wardrobe to be displayed in this stables that the Norwegian Queen, born a briitsh Princess, helped to reformulate at the beginning of the 20th century, inspired by the stables of Buckingham Palace.
