Duquesa de Cambridge nos BAFTA2018 / The Duchess of Cambridge at BAFTA2018

Yesterday the BAFTA 2018 Awards took place in London. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the event. William is Honorary President of the BAFTA and Catherine was the scapegoat in the face of the great issue of "wear or not wear black" in solidarity with the Time is Up movement, which encourages actresses, and women in general, to speak out against sexual harassment and inequality in the film industry, and life in general.

On arrival, the doubts were dispelled. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a dark green dress with a black velvet belt, which she completed with a set of diamonds and emeralds, consisting of a mega necklace, earrings and bracelet and black accessories.
The dress, although similar to one already previously seen, is simple yet beautiful. The jewels gave the final touch to a look where not even the loose hair, slightly wavy, bothered me.

But this look, or rather the color of the look, seems to have troubled many people ... All because the Duchess did not wear black, unlike the great majority of women present at the event.
If the Duchess had worn black, she would probably also be criticized because "a member of the royal family should avoid any action which could be construed as a political statement."
And from here it's all a matter of perception and common sense, my friends:

If the Duchess had used black with the intention of joining the Time is Up movement, this would not be a political expression. It would be a human expression of solidarity and inclusion before the event last night. I would have applauded her decision because I know it would be a gimmick for that purpose.
BUT the Duchess did not wear black (although she used a dark color with black details, which would not have been innocent, in my opinion), and I, as a woman, am not at all offended by her choice, neither.

Nowadays we live in an era in which, as we defend gender equality, we also see a huge lack of respect for women towards other women, and that is only sad. There is a very beautiful thing called congruence, which I think a lot of people are missing. Congruence between what we think, feel, speak and TRULY do.
For me the core of gender equality lies in a woman being able to freely decide, speak, express herself, empower herself in the same way, without fears, without reprisals, without being stoned in a public square.

For professional reasons, gender equality is particularly close to me this week, and I can not fail to see the aggressive debate being generated on social media on this subject - the color of the dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge at the BAFTA - with a certain discomfort and disbelief that once again most people would use such an important question to speak badly about the Duchess of Cambridge, about whom they would surely find grounds for criticism even if the Duchess had used black from head to toe and a sash saying TimesUp on her waist.

Obviously I'm overreacting here and believe me that I understand that many people would loved if the Duchess have done exactly that. But I respect the Duchess's choice not to wear black. Without any depreciation whatsoever for all the actresses and non-actresses who have used this form of protest, there are undoubtedly many other ways to support a cause. A cause that, in my view, is much greater than anything that can be said about a color. A cause that is in everything related to Respect and Choices. A cause that shouldn't be used as a weapon against pet hates. And with regard to the unreasonable comments I have read, good manners, respect and civility are also colors of expression and they are the best colors we can "wear" when we want to show our support for a cause.

I think Catherine got a good balance last night. But I think, above all, that if she intends to use the platform she represents, in defense of this or other causes, that her actions speak louder than the color of her clothes.

  1. I think she looked fantastic !!
As for not wearing black....I really don't care.
Like Frances McDormand said " You should be free to stand sholder to sholder with any cause that you suppoert in your own way, without the need to conform to silly gesture politics"

And I thought it was about women speaking out and being empowered and silence no more! Just because women wear another color do not mean they don't support the cause.

    1. Exactly! Thanks for your comment. And I also think that saying, because she is royal, her clothes are her main expression mark, is really diminish her as royal and as a women.
