Mathilde numa entrevista reveladora sobre os Objectivos Globais das Nações Unidas / Mathilde in a revealing interview on the United Nations Global Goals

Today I bring you an interview with Queen Mathilde of Belgium for the Belgian MO Magazine and that came to me through the blog Queen Mathilde (Rosimeri this blog is for you!). This blog made the translation of the interview into English and I will summarize some parts that I found very interesting.

During this interview Mathilde talks about the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development, of which she is the Official Advocate. I loved what I read. I was pleased to see what the Belgian Queen's opinion on this subject is and what she hopes to achieve with her voice under the UN Agenda 2030.

To better understand Mathilde's interest and involvement in working with the most disadvantaged and  her social committed, we have to look at the family history of the current Belgian queen consort. Mathilde's mother, Anna Komorowska, is a Polish Countess who fled from Communist rule in Poland. During her escape, she lived in Congo, where she experienced poverty and hunger. Images and experiences that were deeply marked in her memory, to the point that, years later and already married to Mathilde's father, the Belgian nobleman Patrick d'Udekem d 'Acoz, she rigidly avoid any wasted food in the House of Udekem d' Acoz .

A Rainha recorda:
From early Anna passed on to her five children this deep sense of help those who have fewer resources. Perhaps influenced by her mother, Mathilde decided at the age of 18 to spend her summer vacation in Cairo, where she planned to work with local non-governmental organizations in the poorest districts of the Egyptian capital. A decision that frightened her parents, but which proved to be preponderant for Mathilde's growth. During this stay Mathilde helped build local schools, taught French and helped children and walked for hours on dusty roads between activities. The Queen recalls:

Aquele Verão mudou-me e transformou-me  na pessoa que sou hoje"
"I wanted to go alone. I knew that the chance of meeting people and opening up to their experiences would be greatly limited if I was accompanied by a friend. I still remember the road, the dust, the smells. That summer changed me and made me into the person I am today".

Mathilde is a speech- therapist, but she also studied psychology, which she finished when she was already Princess of Belgium and Elisabeth's mother.

"I've never had the chance to work as a psychologist, but I can use the insights I gained in my work for Unicef, or in projects that support education and mental health care. My recent encounters in Dehli reminded me of another meeting I had in Mumbai, 10 years ago. I spoke to a woman who had travelled hundreds of kilometers, she talked to me about the way microcredits had changed her life. They had enabled her son to study. I will never forget that woman's eyes".

In the course of this interview, held at the Royal Palace in Brussels, addressing the differences between rich and poor can be at least uncomfortable. But apparently not for Mathilde. The Belgian Queen seems to know very well what she must have in mind to act in the best way, despite the differences between the institution she represents and the people she wants to help:

" As pessoas dão-me verdadeiras lições de esperança e resiliência.
"People give me true lessons of hope and resilience. I give only what I can with my whole heart: time, dedication and dignity. Facing myself with different realities at a given moment, transforms a needy person into a real person with a past and future. Above all, this person becomes a person with human dignity. That is why I always tell my children to look directly at people when they greet them.  It is a way of recognizing someone's dignity."

This time, this dedication and this dignity makes Mathilde want to know the reality, or at least a part of the reality, a controlled part, during the several humanitarian trips to places like Liberia, Haiti, Laos, India or Ghana.

"I can talk about poverty and underdevelopment, but it's really different to experience reality. To witness it with your own eyes. It makes you fully realize that poverty isn't a passing accident. It undermines the physical and even cognitive development of children for the rest of their lives. Investing in food for children is an intelligent investment in a country's economy. Realizing this means you can commit a lot more to the cause."

Before being invited by the former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to be an Advocate for the Global Goals, Mathilde already had work done in her major fields of interest: children, education, development, mental health and the rights of women and girls. This work is a reflection of an extensive research and of several meetings with national and international NGOs. Mathilde confessed to being honored by the invitation because 2030 is at our doorsteps. And the change has to take place now. According to Mathilde the period for declarations has passed. Now is the time to implement the agreements.
Looking at the work developed by Mathilde, it is easy to see that the Global Objectives that are closest to her are the numbers 3, 4 and 5, respectively "Health and well-being for all", "Quality education for all" and "Gender Equality ". But according to the Belgian Queen, all the Goals are important:

WEF Davos 2017 : Sustainable Development Goals
Education and mental health as priorities in the Sustainable Development Goals (WEF Davos).

A questão é: estamos nós a dar-lhes visibilidade suficiente? "
"Without exception, each of the 17 Goals is important. These goals change the dialogue between North and South, with necessary changes in the South. We now speak of a more inclusive, more universal history where each one of us is responsible for the future we have in common The developed world becomes a real actor, and the business world is called to take part in this responsibility. We have to be congruent. We have to act according to what we preach. Intuitively the younger generation is more aware and more sensitive about Agenda 2030 and they know their contribution does not have to be massive as long as it's real. The question is: are we giving them enough visibility? "

About the role of the younger generations, Mathilde, as mother of four adolescents, is not indifferent to any opportunity she finds relevant so that her children become aware of different realities and learn about the past with stories of resistance from strong people who have much to teach us. Mathilde tells the story about the time she took her four children on a 700km trip to France to meet an elderly lady who was sent to Auschwitz at the age of 16, where she lost all her family during World War II. Mathilde wanted his children to hear her story of .... hope:

"I've seen hell", the lady told us. "But even in hell humanity exists and survives. A dying woman gave me her bread and ordered me to survive." She also told us how her father, before the war, never asked about her school results. Instead he asked if she has asked the right questions in class that day. She assured my children: "That's the most important thing you can learn as a child, a teenager, a human being: to ask the right questions."

Fazer as perguntas certas.
Ask the right questions. I have heard that we are not in this life to find all the answers. But to ask the right questions: Who am I? What I want? What makes me happy? What have I done today to improve the day of another human being? What have I done today to contribute to a better planet? How do I want to be treated? How do I want to be remembered when I'm gone? If I die today, will my work last?

Profissionalmente estou a trabalhar neles.
I know this is a royalty blog, but if through it many of you already know what the United Nations 's Global Goals for Sustainable Development are and if some of you even read about it through the blog, I think I asked at least one right question. Professionally I'm working on them. Personally they live in me. Partly because I believe in Mathilde's words that motivate her in this mission that brings together Governments, Society and Companies.

"Juntos podemos fazer  a diferença. Juntos podemos colocar a nossa energia e encorajar outros a unirem-se nesta causa."
"Together we can make a difference. Together we can put our energy and encourage others to unite in this cause."
And I can not express how wonderful it is when passion and purpose unite in a human being. I feel this every day more and more and I hope, even if in a light way, to pass on that wonderful feeling that I feel for you! I've never liked royalty as much as now, because I realized that we can all be noble in a cause.

  1. Querida Lurdes!!
